“Everything's magical when it snows. Everything looks pretty” - Lorelai Gilmore
Love and War and Snow is the 8th episode of Season 1 of Gilmore Girls.
During a snowstorm that leaves Lorelai (Lauren Graham) stranded in Stars Hollow and unable to attend the weekly dinner at her parents, Rory (Alexis Bledel) spends the night away with Emily and Richard. Luke (Scott Patterson) expresses his dissatisfaction with the town's annual re-enactment of a Revolutionary War battle that never took place. Frustrated with Rory’s lack of interest in her social life, Lane accidentally lets her feelings get the better of her and she touches a boy’s hair in the band. Mortified, she runs away and sleeps at Rory’s house waiting for her to get home.
While stuck in the snow, Max Medina has to spend the evening in Stars Hollow and is pleasantly surprised when he sees Lorelai alone. The pair romantically walk through the snow, get coffee and go back to her place before their plans are scuppered by a sleeping Lane. He does stay over on the couch though!
This episode, "Love and War and Snow", introduces Richard's ex-fiancé, Pennilyn Lott, where she is referred to as Lynnie Lott. She will then be seen in person later in the series while the Gilmores attend the Harvard vs. Yale football game.
Emily's sister, Hope, who lives in Paris, is mentioned for the first and only time in the episode "Love and War and Snow".
The episode, "Love and War and Snow", marks the introduction of Stars Hollow's town meetings.
Andrew makes his first appearance on the series in "Love and War and Snow".
In a photo album Rory brings down to show Richard and Emily, the picture of Emily's sister Hopie is actually a photo of Kelly Bishop, the actress who portrays Emily.
During the snowstorm, Rory finds a photo album at her grandparents' house, leading Richard and Emily to reminisce. Richard mentions Emily's fascination with Errol Flynn and how she even tried to get him to grow a moustache like Flynn's. Interestingly, in later seasons, Richard does grow a moustache similar to Errol Flynn's, which becomes a point of contention between him and Emily.
"Love and War and Snow" is one of the rare occasions when all the main characters appear together in one episode.
In the heart-to-heart scene between Lorelai and Lane, where they discuss Lane's boy problems while Rory is stuck in Hartford, Lane's jeans can be seen cut down the back. This is a common practice by wardrobe designers when altering pants to fit an actor, as mentioned by Lauren Graham in one of her books.
Rory mentions to her mother that she might use their conversations in a future tell-all book. In the Netflix revival series, Rory becomes a writer and indeed writes a tell-all book about their lives.
During the episode, Richard and Emily eat frozen pizza, and Richard comments that it's quite good and better than the salmon that keeps showing up. This foreshadows future episodes where Richard expresses his dislike for salmon, as Emily becomes obsessed with serving it after his heart attack.
When Rory returns home after spending the night at her grandparents', Lorelai greets her on the porch. In some shots, a man presumed to be a production person can be seen in the trees behind Rory.
During the scene on Lorelai's porch where she and Max are debating whether to enter the house together, there is inconsistency with a snowflake on Lorelai's hat. It appears in some shots showing the back of her head and is absent in others.
At the Stars Hollow town meeting, when Harry is speaking, there is a discrepancy with the placement of his hat. In frontal shots, the hat is seen sitting on the top ledge of the lectern, but in shots from behind, it is shown on the shelf part of the lectern.
During Lorelai's phone conversation with Emily and Rory in "Love and War and Snow", the objects in front of her on the desk change.
Rory discovers a photo album that includes pictures of Lorelai as a baby. However, in a future episode, it is mentioned that Lorelai destroyed all her baby photos because Emily constantly commented on her having a big head.
When Rory returns from being stranded overnight in Hartford and meets Lorelai on the porch, there is significant snowfall in the background, but there are no snowflakes on Rory's hair, jacket, or backpack, and her hair is completely dry.
When Lorelai and Max arrive at her house, they are free of snow despite walking through a snowfall.
At the beginning of the episode, in Max's voicemail message to Lorelai, he mentions passing the Stars Hollow sign on the road and thinking of her, implying that he knows she lives there. However, later when he encounters Lorelai in Stars Hollow after his car breaks down, he appears stunned and surprised by her presence. This is inconsistent with his earlier knowledge of her living in the town.
In the previous episode, Lane learned from Todd that Dean is deathly allergic to walnuts. However, in this episode, Rory brings Dean a batch of Rocky Road Cookies, which traditionally contain walnuts.
Upon arriving at Lorelai's house, Max claims it's his first time being there, even though he has previously visited in the episode "Cinnamon's Wake."
